Its late spring, and my chickens are all laying, and the zucchini plants are powering along.
I was making a zucchini slice for the two-legged lunch boxes, and thought I would try one for the 4 legged too. If we are all eating it, the dogs can too!
Making these healthy dog treats helped to use up some surplus produce.
I have used turmeric in this recipe, to allow for some additional phytonutrients with anti-inflammatory properties. Let food be thy medicine and all that.
The amount of Turmeric in these is not a therapeutic dose. Because Turmeric is quite a strong flavour, increasing this amount may make these a little more unpalatable. You can play with the turmeric amounts for your dog to see if they are tolerant of the higher amounts. I have added some black pepper for absorption of turmeric's active therapeutic constituent curcuminoids. The egg yolk, and oil used for greasing the tin will add in the oils to help with this absorption as well.
I have used some gluten free flour to bind them. You could make these without the flour, or you can add in some other binding agent like some almond flour, depending on your dogs nutritional needs.
My eggs are medium sized free range eggs. If you have very large, or very small eggs, adjust accordingly. Keep the egg shell for eggshell powder as a nice homemade calcium supplement.
Versatility of this healthy dog treat recipe
What I really love about this recipe is how easy it is to modify based on what you have growing in the garden, or what your dog likes to eat.
Adding some fresh chopped herbs like parsley can increase the phytonutrients.
Adding bacon, cooked chicken or cooked mince can increase the palatability.
Swap the Zucchini out for some grated pumpkin
Hiding supplements or medications
I have used these to disguise a supplement before! I slip the tablet inside and no-one was the wiser.
It is important that you watch your dogs carefully to ensure they actually did swallow the tablet. Sometimes they might need a second go to get it down, or a little physical encouragement to swallow it.
For very small dogs, you may need to cut these up into smaller pieces to be able to hide medication in these.
